Poker players are championing a change towards a healthier lifestyle

Healthy Eating and Exercise: The Poker Player’s Best Bet
Poker players are championing a change towards a healthier lifestyle

Poker is a largely sedentary game. Whether they’re facing bright computer screens or sitting across a table from their opponents, professional poker players basically sit around all day counting chips and handling cards. Sounds pretty unhealthy, right? Well, a large number of poker players are championing a change towards a healthier lifestyle.

Jason Mercier, who is currently in the top five of Global Poker Index’s Player of the Year rankings, is a prime example. According to Mercier, not only has his fitness regimen helped him stay in good health, it has also yielded positive results on the poker table. “I try to do a lot of physical activity when I’m not playing – working out, playing basketball and other sports,” he told PokerStrategy last year. ”My body and mind are trained to play poker at a high level.”

As Mercier shows, the benefits of healthy eating and exercise go beyond just maintaining a fit physique. The Mayo Clinic acknowledges that they have mental as well as physical benefits. As you improve your physical attributes, you become more relaxed and you feel happier, leading to confidence and a clarity of mind brought on by reduced stress.

Being physically, mentally, and psychologically healthy also helps boost your energy levels. According to WebMD, eating a balanced diet that includes lean meats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will give your body the energy it needs to perform in tip top shape for longer periods of time. Best of all, you don’t stand to experience the sudden energy crash that you get when drinking or eating food with high sugar contents.

Another pro poker player who leads a healthy lifestyle Daniel Negreanu, who also happens to hold the leading position in GPI’s Player of the Year race. A known vegan and juice advocate, Negreanu also exercises regularly with his trainer and claims that physical exercise leads to happiness. For him, it’s the best way to recover from a bad mood – something that Negreanu gave fellow pro Phil Hellmuth with an excellent bluff during the PartyPoker.com Premier League VI tournament. You can see the video for yourself on PartyPoker’s YouTube channel.

The higher level of energy coupled with improved confidence is a good combination to have when you want to play a good game of poker. Choosing to eat healthy and exercise brings you more than just the winnings. The real prize is being able to lead a healthier and longer life.
